60-Yard Mitts With a Thumb Gusset

I made these mitts out of about 50-yards of white Mohair. They are really warm. This is a great stash buster or last minute gift idea.

Needles: size 8 circular or straight
Gauge: 4 stitches per inch; 5 rows per inch
Yarn: worsted weight
Other: two stitch markers, yarn needle
Mitts are knit flat and seamed.

Sm: slip marker
M1: make one. To do this, I knit into the front of the stitch, then before removing it from the needle, I knit into the back of the stitch, increasing one stitch each time.

Using a long tail (or other stretchy CO method)
CO 24 stitches
Knit first four rows in two by two rib
Row 1: K2, P2 around
Row 2: P2, K2 around

Row 5: (and all odd rows) knit all stitches
Row 6: (and all even rows) purl all stitches
Continue with this (Stockinet stitch) until distance from CO reaches where you want the thumb gusset to start (base of thumb). End with a purl row.

Thumb Gusset Row
Row 1: Knit eight stitches. Place marker. K1, m1, k1. K1, m1. Place marker.
Row 2: Purl all stitches.
Row 3: Knit to first marker. sm, k1, m1, k3, k1, m1, sm, Knit to end of row.
Row 4: Purl all stitches.
Row 5: Knit to marker, sm, k1, m1, k5, k1, m1, sm. Knit to end of row.
Row 6: Purl all stitches.
Continue this way until you have 13 stitches between the markers.
Next even row: purl to marker, remove marker, bind off gusset stitches, remove marker, purl to end of row.
Continue with Stockinet stitch until piece is about one inch shorter than desired length.
Knit all rows for four rows. Bind off all stitches.
Use. Length of yarn to sew side seam.

Next mitt is made the same way, except, for thumb gusset, knit 12 stitches before placing first marker.
